UoN, Makerere varsities in top 10 Africa rankings, see where the rest are

The University of Nairobi has been ranked eighth among top 15 institutions whose research has been cited by academics worldwide.
UoN attained a research score of 84.6, and recorded 671.72 publications, in the first ever Africa University Rankings by Times Higher Education.
The rankings were for 2009 to 2013, during which the universities were required to have published a minimum of 500 research papers, with at least 50 every year.
South Africa dominated the top five positions with University of Cape Town at the top followed by Witwatersrand and Uganda’s Makerere.
Cape Town had an overall score of 99.90 (5540.21 publications), Witwatersrand 99.76 (4387.17 publications) while Makerere scored 99.72 at 1112.69 publications.
They were followed by Stellenbosch, with a 95.48 research score at 4357.33 publications and KwaZulu-Natal with an 89.41 score at 4235.09 publications.
Nigeria’s University of Port Harcourt came sixth with a score of 88.92 (573.55 publications), followed by South Africa’s University of the Western Cape at 84.61 (1154.77 publications).
“This is an experimental and preliminary ranking based solely on research, and only on one aspect of research – how many times research papers are cited by other academics,” said Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Baty said factors such as teaching, economic contribution and civil education will be considered when ranking all universities in Africa.
The names of the top 15 institutions were released on Wednesday ahead of the inaugural Times Higher Education Africa Universities Summit.
The ranking of 30 African institutions will be revealed during the meeting set for July 30 and 31 at the University of Johannesburg.
Education players attending the summit will discuss plans for comprehensive ranking, resource renewal, preventing brain drain and pushing the 2063 initiative.
